...sure enough, she returns with a bow and some arrows, which she's got tucked into the sash at her waist for lack of a quiver. She doesn't really see any reason to hide it at this point.]
But, onward to the forest, anyway. She's been here a few times since getting her bow - and she seems pretty comfortable with the trail.]
How far in do you want to go?
[She's not really afraid of running into any animals - the smaller ones she can handle, and the more dangerous ones... well, they're both armed! What do they have to be afraid of?]
Not too far. Wouldn't want to make you nervous being out alone in the woods with some guy. (He's teasing.) But enough so we don't get in anyone's way, for sure.
(Safety first.)
Archer mentioned he made a bow and arrows for a student. I'm guessing that was you since you gave him a knife?
I think "some guy" should be more nervous about being out alone in the woods with me.
[She's teasing too! Obviously. But at his question, she nods. There really isn't much reason to hide it, given that they were both pretty upfront about it at the trial.]
Yes. We talked a little when we first woke up here, and he agreed to teach me some things and make a bow for me so I wouldn't fall out of practice, since mine didn't come here with me.
[That whole execution was more than a little unsettling.
Yona's trying to think through it, but just sitting and thinking leaves her feeling unsettled (and also thinking in circles), so she's heading for the woods. Along the way she spots Claude, and -
Well, training with him went well earlier in the week. So.]
...Claude? Would you mind going to the woods with me again?
Ah, should I be careful? (A playful throwback to their last conversation. He's not the type to stay down. He has to pick himself back up and keep going. There are people who rely on him.) Actually, I was on my way.
[...wow! They really are similar. That quip gets a chuckle out of her, at least.]
Maybe you should be.
[Anyway! Onward they go. It's not too difficult to find somewhere to shoot - in fact, it's not too difficult to find that same poor tree they kept shooting earlier. This tree is probably very tired of them by now.]
...so, that was... a lot, huh?
[She asks, as she's drawing an arrow from the sash at her waist.]
(And he's up to bat! Ready to go. He just has to take aim,)
I wonder what this means for the future, though. (He waits for a breeze, a few leaves falling from the tree and... releases, letting out a sigh,) We really messed up this time.
(His arrow lands in a different place, a fair distance away from her arrow but still firmly in the trunk, next to a branch.)
(AND THEN THERE WERE FREE ARROWS and every archer came running to the ruins for the harvest.
Claude has two table clothes from the inn folded under his arm and he's just explaining his plan to Yona,)
We can probably use these to net us some of the arrows. We'll have to see if the arrows just shoot through or not... but if we can slow down the force, we can get more in one piece.
[Wow this is. Way smarter than her plan, honestly.
(Her plan was just trying to dodge the arrows. She has a couple of wounds from Monday that are bandaged up, but they didn't hit anything lethal, so it's fine, really. She's good to go! Come at her, arrows!)
So, as he's explaining, she nods, cracking her knuckles as they head for the ruins. She hasn't spoken a word, but she also hasn't done that since, like, Monday, so that's not terribly surprising. (The Realm finally made Yona shut up!)]
(Really, Yona... what were you doing! Please, use your head.)
You too, huh? (He taps his throat with his finger,) That was me all day yesterday.
I guess that's what I get for running my mouth over the weekend though.
(Accuse someone of murder... get silent, I guess? When they get to the ruins, he'll slow down and look around to try and figure out the best way to go about this,)
You've been busy too, right? Any ideas? I'm thinking one of us will have to get across and figure out how to put one end up while the other stays on this side.
[She nods. But, hm! Hearing that he was quiet yesterday and can talk now has her feeling more hopeful that she'll be able to talk again later.
(She won't unless I get super fed up with charades.)
But, hmm... she studies the ruins for a bit. She's somewhat familiar with this area from the day before, and she mimes walking very, very slowly and carefully before gesturing down the hall with the traps.]
[Yona's made it through memshare Monday, and here she is hoping that today isn't going to turn into another day of that. Unfortunately, those memory bubbles are still around, and as she's practicing her archery in the woods, a bubble drifts right in front of her arrow and is popped just before the arrow lodges itself into the trunk of a tree.
Coincidentally, this happens just as Claude is passing by.
All at once, they're on a ship (timestamp 11:33 because youtube hates me and no longer has these there so I have to go to crunchyroll). There's the sound of arrows whizzing through the air, and the clank of metal on metal, pained grunts as people fight and die out on the sea. Yoon calls out to two of the fighters that "Kum-ji" should be on a certain ship, and as people emerge from the one they're on to tie up some of the mercenaries, Yona stares out at the water, her expression stony.
Yona doesn't see Jae-ha search for Kum-ji belowdecks, but she does see when Shin-ah points out where he's fled the scene in a much smaller boat, and she does see when Jae-ha leaps out over the ocean to catch up with him. she sees when Kum-ji draws his bow and shoots him out of the sky.
She sees when he aims his bow at him where he's helpless in the water.
"Well, flying dragon? You can't fly, now that you've fallen into the sea!"
...but something draws his attention away from him.
It's Yona.
She's standing at the front of the ship, her bow aimed directly at him, practically radiating rage and bloodlust.
Somehow (and it should be impossible), she hears him say her name aloud.
"...Princess Yona."
She lets the arrow fly, and even with the distance, even with the rocking of the ship she stands on and the smaller boat he's in on the waves -
Her arrow strikes right through to his heart.
He falls over the side of his boat and vanishes beneath the water, and Yona, where she's standing, remembers her father. she remembers his smile in life, and remembers his pale, lifeless form in death.
Father...
She stares out at the water, until the memory ends at timestamp 16:45.]
(The memory unfolds and it doesn't take him long to figure out what's going on. A battle at sea, a leader of some sort fleeing while striking down an ally.
The bloodlust.
Is not unfamiliar to him.
He's certainly felt it enough times to recognize it and truly, he isn't surprised to see the source. It's something he can relate to. If someone had tried to strike down one of his friends... if someone had brought Hilda down from the air or had Lysithea or Lorenz pinned down at the end of their arrow, he would do the same without hesitation.
As the memory fades, there's no judgement from Claude who only continues approaching from her side and readies his own arrow.
(It's a good routine. He likes it. Even if the day changes, he enjoys these sessions with Yona.))
A war princess, huh?
(He takes his time getting ready. That bloodlust doesn't come from no where. You don't find that during times of peace. Not from people like Yona who seems to care for others.)
It wasn't the first time I've had to fight, but it was the first time I took a life.
[And, frankly, that man deserved it! She doesn't look like she regrets it at all. Sometimes people just have to die. As for the rest of it, though - ]
We weren't exactly at war, though. He was the lord of the city of Awa - and he was selling women from his city to another country to line his own pockets. It was time for him to be stopped, one way or another.
(Ah, so it was her first kill. Immediately, he recalls his own and... yes. It doesn't change his initial thoughts of the memory but it certainly puts things into a more relatable perspective. He'd done the same the first time he took his bow and aimed it at a bandit at Zanado. No regrets, no hesitation, he was more than willing to take a life to protect those precious to him.
As she explains, his face twists just slightly into a look of disgust. Such a despicable man, he thinks.)
Not a war but still terrible. (He lines his shot,) Good riddance.
(Good job, Yona.
And he releases his arrow! Which shoots right through one of those black filled bubbles. Had he done it on purpose? Hm.)
(What they notice first is the scent of something burning and the group of knights and students pick up their pace, hurrying down the worn path towards the village ahead. When they arrive, what they see is a village on fire and what they hear are screams.
Everyone looks out in horror and confusion. Some of them look like they could break formation and charge into the village on their own but they’re held back, kept in line by a knight on a horse, an enigmatic woman, and Claude who all seem to place themselves in front of the more impulsive members of their group and the village.
“This is unbelievable,” Claude remarks, “There’s no way to tell who’s lost their mind from who’s mad with fear…”
“If we don’t act quickly, things are just going to keep getting worse!” Hilda exclaims, deeply troubled and holding her hands together in front of her tightly.
“It’s horrifying,” The dark haired woman agrees, her voice calm and clear. Though she doesn’t seem to express much, the way her brow knits closely together and her mouth presses into a tight line shows how concerned she really is.
Among the group, they try to discuss their next course of action. They try to reason with what they’re watching. Can they save the villagers? It’s not their fault they’re rampaging and out of control, is it? It’s the disease! The dark magic! Whatever it is! Can’t we just knock them out instead of killing them? It’s too reckless to hold back like that. Even if they are innocent, even if this isn’t their fault, people will die. Then it must be the will of the goddess. Stop that. None of this madness is the will of the goddess.
There are things that Claude agrees with and things he can’t. Wouldn’t it be ideal if they could save everyone in this village? Yes, he would like that very much if they could but logistically, there are too many people. The situation is too chaotic. They have to prioritize the innocent villagers over the mad ones or else they’ll have a blood bath.
He hates that this can be so easily passed off on the goddess. What does she have to do with any of this? The goddess didn’t make these people mad. If they stopped dismissing everything as a part of some divine plan they would notice—
A white haired girl speaks calmly, “Claude. There are some strange-looking people here.”
“So you noticed too. Look. There's a suspicious group hiding amongst the villagers. Could they be the culprits? If so…” He knew he could count on Lysithea. Ever reasonable, always level headed, despite being the youngest, he knew he could count on her. “There you have it. Our objective is clear. Take down the suspicious group and rescue the villagers.”
From there, the rest of the plan falls into place. Prioritize saving the villagers. The knights will try to rein in the ones who have turned violent and the students will focus on rescuing the others. If they can apprehend any of the suspicious people among the chaos then try but don’t get any crazy ideas.
The battle that unfolds is long and tense. It really is difficult to tell who the mad villagers are from the ones desperately fighting for their lives. There are times when Claude hesitates, uncertain about who he’s aiming at and regrets it when a violent village charges at him. Sometimes, he’s able to disarm them, shooting with his bow or slashing with his sword at their arms and legs so they can no longer move or fight. Other times, he finds himself in more dire situations and has to resort to more drastic measures. An arrow pierces a heart, his blade cuts into someone’s stomach. He’s a skilled fighter and truly, if this had been any other ordinary battle, he wouldn’t be nearly as harmed as he is now.
Every now and then, he catches sight of a mysterious soldier and tries to give chase only to lose them in the chaos or the ruins. Finally, he gets far enough that he can make out… a familiar face among the enemy. A gentle looking, elderly man with a quiet smile and thoughtful eyes.
“It can't be… The one giving orders to the weird ruffians… Isn't that Tomas?” He looks surprised to see him and he isn’t the only one. The dark haired woman also notices and begins to cut a direct path towards him, her eyes focused. “I’m going with Teach!” Claude yells at his allies, “Take care of the area!” And he follows after her.
The closer they get, the more strange soldiers they encounter. Even when they try to reason with them and demand answers, they stay silent, keeping their secrets with them to the grave. He wonders if they could just capture one of them, could they interrogate them for answers later? But there’s no time to dwell when their lives are on the line. With Byleth, he strikes down anyone that gets in his way. There are times in his fights when a golden light appears over Claude and a crescent moon shines on him and when it does, it appears as though his injuries heal themselves, the cuts on his body closing and the bruises fading away, leaving behind fresh blood and torn clothes but otherwise, an unharmed body.
At some point in the battle, Claude calls out to Tomas who rejects the name and reveals himself to be not the kind faced librarian he’d known but a twisted, dark mage named Solon. Claude gapes, taken aback and Solon laughs and reveals how he’d hidden away at Garreg mach and conducted experiments using the blood from a young girl named Flayn.
“Is this… the experiment?” Claude asks in disbelief.
Solon doesn’t reply. Instead, he looks out at the village from his point, a look of disgust and disappointment on his face and lets out a wicket laugh, “They charge in without any plan whatsoever. Beasts, all of them…”
Claude’s eyes follow Solon’s gaze. He’s watching the villagers, Claude notes immediately and he breaks into a desperate run, switching from sword to bow and taking aim at Solon.
“ The experiment is over.” The dreaded man proclaims, “Kill them!”
Screams break out through out the village and it’s enough to get Claude to look away from Solon, turning his attention to the villagers around him. They beg for help, demand answers, and wonder aloud why their goddess abandoned them…
And they drop dead.
"You monster!” Claude yells, glaring at Solon. His body trembles, he grips his bow tightly, and he doesn’t bother to contain his rage, “We could have saved them!”
And the memory ends abruptly, just as a the dark haired mercenary charges at Solon.)
[...they come out of the memory, and Yona looks just as furious as Claude had seemed to be at that time.
The memory was so vivid - it was like being there. She has to shake her head to dislodge the echoes of their screams, and she realizes dimly that her hands are clenched so tightly that her nails are digging into her palms. She lets out a breath and forces herself to loosen the grip.]
